LOCAL juniors dominated the South Newcastle Rugby League Club team of the century unveiled on Saturday night.

The selection committee of former Herald journalist George Piggford, club men David Evans and Trevor Prince and Newcastle Rugby League patron Jack Winney picked two 17-man sides, one of locally produced players and the other an all-time best team.

A bench was not named, selectors instead picking the extra four players in their positions.

Premiership-winning 1940s coach Frank Roarty was named coach of both sides.

Australian Test player Les Johns was picked at fullback in both squads, while Ned Andrews, Brian Jones, Andy Norval, Gary Banks, Paul Merlo, Jim Quinn, Perce Pritchard and Alf and Jim Gibbs were selected in both sides.

Peter Howlett was named at lock in the all-time team. He was also picked in Western Suburbs' team of the century last month. Howlett played more than 100 games for both clubs.

Andrews and Souths halfback of the century Pritchard, both aged 88, were the oldest ex-players to attend the 100-year anniversary dinner which attracted more than 300 people to Souths Leagues Club.

On the night, Johns also launched a centenary book, entitled a 100 Years in the Lion's Den compiled by Prince and Souths committee man John Fleming.

Newcastle poet Lindsay Young performed a 10-minute piece called Lion's Tale covering Souths' 10 premierships.
