HELENSBURGH businessman Greg Petty will challenge MP Paul McLeay for the Illawarra seat of Heathcote.

Mr Petty, who has been involved in a community campaign against changes to 7d land zoning around Helensburgh, Stanwell Tops and Otford, will run on the lower house ticket led by former South Coast MP and anti-corruption campaigner John Hatton.

Mr Petty, 56, said he would represent community, environment and small business "with a commitment to full, open transparency, honesty and altruistic goals, free of party influence."

Key concerns include protecting the Royal National Park and Sydney Water Catchment area, and opposition to coal seam gas mining. He will unveil policies closer to the election, after consulting the community.

A small-businessman, he now runs an importing company and a Unanderra self-storage firm.

Mr Petty's involvements include the Otford Protection Society and a Community Fire Unit.
