PLAYERS from Cessnock's glorious 1950s and 1970s eras dominated selection in the club's teams of the century unveiled on Saturday night at the club's centenary dinner.

More than 450 people packed into Cessnock Supporters Club to see the Team of the Century and Junior Team of the Century announced.

Of the 28 named across both 17-man teams, 10 played during the two decades that brought the club six of their eight premierships.

Fullback David Parkinson, centre Lester Batey and forwards Barry Levido and Don Schofield were part of sides that won premierships in 1950, 1954, 1955 and 1960, and were in both centenary teams.

Team of the century players were judged on what they achieved at the Goannas, while the junior side was chosen from home-grown talent that excelled in black and gold or with other clubs.

Team of the century members Doug Tanna, George Ambrum, Norm Henderson and Bob Everson played when Cessnock won premierships in 1972 and 1977.

The only current player named in the junior side was winger Chris Pyne.

Todd Edwards, who coached Cessnock to three unsuccessful grand finals between 2008 and 2010 in his only years in charge, said it was the greatest honour he had received in rugby league to be named coach of the junior team of the century.

"I was shocked to be involved with some of those players on that list," he said.

"It is quite amazing."

Cessnock's most famous sons, Knights legends Matthew and Andrew Johns, attended the dinner.
