Austereo's troubled flagship station 2Day has announced changes to its on-air line-up in a bid to regain a foothold near or at the top of the Sydney market next year.

In an unusual move, management has flipped its drivetime and breakfast shows, putting Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O into the critical early morning slot and moving The Judith Lucy Show to the late afternoon, where it will be heard nationally on the Today network.

2Day dominated the Sydney market for most of the 1990s, but it began to lose audience steadily after the launch of rival FM station Nova three years ago. It lost more ground when popular breakfast host Wendy Harmer left the station at the end of last year.

Melbourne comedienne and actress Lucy, and her co-hosts Peter Helliar and Kaz Cooke, have struggled in their attempts to rebuild the audience, and only managed a 6.5 per cent share in the latest radio survey.

In contrast, Austereo's decision to move Sandilands and Jackie O from the Hot 30 night-time slot to the drive shift this year was popular with listeners.

The Austereo chief executive officer, Michael Anderson, said, "It became clear through consumer research and management discussions that we had the perfect shows in imperfect parts of the day."

The new breakfast show will have more focus on Australian pop culture, entertainment and celebrity interviews.

"We still have great faith in Judith but it was going to take too long for the show to succeed in breakfast," Mr Anderson said.
