In a major upset and for the second year running television host Rove
McManus was crowned Australia's most popular television personality at last
night's 46th TV Week Logie Awards, shutting out the widely tipped Delta Goodrem.
McManus also outscored previous Gold Logie winner Georgie Parker and actors
Lisa Chappell and John Wood (for his eighth consecutive nomination) to win his
second Gold Logie.
Goodrem left empty-handed after being beaten by McManus for the gold and by
McLeod's Daughters star Lisa Chappell for the Most Popular Actress Silver
Logie. A total of 27 awards were handed out, 12 of them voted by readers of TV
Week magazine, and the remaining 11 voted by industry peer panels.
McLeod's Daughters, the Channel Nine drama series , added Most Popular
Program Silver Logie, and logies for Most Popular Australian Drama, and Most
Popular Actor (Aaron Jeffery) to its Silver Logie for Chappell.
Channel Ten's youth drama The Secret Life of Us, which was recently taken
off air after a drop in its popularity this year, was rewarded with a Logie for
Outstanding Drama Series.
One of its stars, actress Deborah Mailman , was also a winner, taking out a
Silver Logie for Outstanding Actress.
Channel Ten made a surprise win in drama, with After The Deluge winning
Outstanding Mini-Series/Telemovie, beating Blackjack (Ten), Marking Time (ABC),
The Postcard Bandit (Nine) and The Shark Net (ABC).
Ray Barrett, who starred in After the Deluge, also won a Logie for
Outstanding Actor in a Drama.
Mother and daughter act Kath & Kim tied for Outstanding Comedy Series, with
the political satire CNNN.
Kath & Kim was nominated for Most Popular Light Entertainment or Comedy, a
category won by McManus's Rove [Live].
Highlights from the night included a performance by Cirque Du Soleil ; and
Michael Buble, Anastacia and Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian.
Bert Newton, Mel Brooks, Paul Hogan, Jana Wendt and Bold & The Beautiful
star Ronn Moss presented. Bridie Carter from McLeod's Daughters, model Megan
Gale , Jamie Durie , the Saddle Club girls and Claudia Karvan were among
guests. Before the start of the awards at Crown Casino, hosted by Eddie McGuire,
the red carpet spectacular proved its usual eye-popping mix of faux pax and
Serial Logies fashion tragic Susie Elelman took line honours for most
desperate attention-seeking ploy when she whipped off the hood of her
black-sequinned cape to reveal a freshly shaved head.
Elsewhere on the read carpet, cleavage was popular, along with shades of
green and champagne.
Jeanne Little trotted out a self-made black velvet strapless gown,
embellished with white doves as her ``tribute to peace on earth."
Among others providing this year's fashion misses were Pizza's Maria Venuti
and Annalise Braakensiek , in cleavage-baring designs that were simply too loud
and outrageous for a refined fashion affair.
