Dons put Henneman's career on ice

REPORTS of Aaron Henneman's footballing demise have been exaggerated. For now.

Two weeks after announcing it had axed the defender after eight seasons at Essendon, the club yesterday reserved the right to change its mind, not including him on the list of four delisted players it lodged with the AFL.

While Henneman may yet be delisted by a second list deadline on November 17, and probably will, the decision indicates the Bombers do not have great faith in landing a big enough fish at the pre-season draft in December.

Essendon's chief operating officer, Travis Auld, said yesterday Henneman had been retained pending further assessment of what was on offer in the pre-season draft pool. "Aaron was made aware that this would be the process following the conclusion of the season," he said.

The Bombers officially cut Joel Reynolds, Tristan Cartledge and Austin Lucy yesterday, as well as Adam Ramanauskas and rookies Ben Jolley, Tim O'Keefe and Matthew Firman.

Dean Rioli's retirement and Dean Solomon's move to Fremantle mean they have six picks available for use in the national and pre-season drafts. The club is still awaiting AFL advice on whether Ramanauskas, who continues to have chemotherapy treatment, can be listed as a mature-aged rookie.

Essendon also confirmed that Adam McPhee had signed a three-year deal, the 24-year-old declaring himself injury-free.

Collingwood yesterday confirmed that only one Cloke - Travis - would be on its list in 2007, after Jason and Cameron were cut.

Their father, former champion David Cloke, said both brothers were told last Friday that they were gone, but he was hopeful both would find opportunities at other clubs next season. The Kangaroos were linked with Cameron during trade week, and David said Jason had also attracted some interest.

"This is not the end of it. The boys are training, they haven't stopped since the season finished and we think there will be something out there for both of them," he said. "There have been a few inquiries made about both boys. Nothing's been finalised, but they've both shown that they can play at that level and they're fit and keen to get another chance at it."

Carlton cleared an eighth place on its list in preparation for next month's "super-draft" and decided against devoting a third-round pick to Jake Williams, the son of Greg, or Wayne Johnston's son Tomi.

Both have been invited to train with the Blues should they go undrafted next month, while Ken Sheldon's son Sam decided to spend another season in the under 18s.

Justin Davies was delisted, joining the retired Barnaby French and Callum Chambers, Luke Livingston, Troy Longmuir, Cory McGrath, Ian Prendergast and Trent Sporn on the exit list.

West Coast upgraded premiership forward Steven Armstrong from its rookie to senior list, along with Sandover medallist Matt Priddis.

Damien Adkins was cut along with Travis Gaspar and Brad Smith, who has had two knee reconstructions since being drafted in 2004.

Melbourne elevated Matthew Warnock and Adem Yze was placed on the veterans list.

Port Adelaide yesterday confirmed that premiership player Stuart Dew was taking some time out to consider his future.

He has not yet decided whether he will play on in 2007.
