WITH a gentle offshore wind creating near-perfect waves at Newcastle Beach yesterday, the Surfest contest site could have been mistaken for a set on TV's Summer Bay.

But soapie star Ryan Clark still found himself dumped from the opening round of the Lost/Wild Surf Co Pro Junior.

The 17-year-old, better known as `Sam Marshall' to Home and Away viewers, finished third in his four-man morning heat behind fellow New South Welshman Joel Bonning and American Anthony Petrusco.

Clark spent almost a decade with Home and Away, having joined the soap as a seven-year-old (his growing up on screen corresponded with an increase in his female fanbase).

His disappointing early exit from the Pro Junior yesterday pales in significance when compared with his turmoil in TV land.

Marshall was the product of a broken home whose foster mother died after marrying his birth father. No wonder he left the series ? to pursue a surfing career, no less ? although he returned recently for a guest appearance.
