A YEAR after joining Home & Away, former Muswellbrook boy Cameron Welsh has been nominated for a Logie for most popular new talent.

Welsh's rivals in the silver Logie category are comedians Rove McManus and James O'Loghlin and another Summer Bay poster boy, Justin Melvey.

`I think Justin's a shoe-in,' a diplomatic Welsh, 22, told Friday at Nine this week.

Welsh, who plays Mitch McColl on the sunny teen soap, returned to TV screens on Monday night following a month's bed rest to recover from a herniated disc in his lower back.

Producers took the drastic step of hiring another actor to fill in.

`I had to spend 23 hours a day lying on my back doped to the eyeballs on Valium . . . it was Lucy in the sky with diamonds,' Welsh laughed.

One year into a three-year contract with the Prime serial, Welsh credited his uncle, actor David Field, of Two Hands fame, for `inspiring' his acting career and a high school English teacher from his Muswellbrook days, Ross McGowan, for `opening my mind' to Shakespeare.
