MAITLAND Gaol looked alive again with prisoners yesterday as Home and Away wrapped four days of filming at the historic site.

The TV series spent two days last week and two days this week filming a behind-bars sequence at the jail.

While production co-ordinator Alison Gordon was careful not to give away the storyline yesterday, she confirmed that stars such as Ray Meagher, Kate Ritchie, Rhys Wakefield, Mark Furze and Indiana Evans had filmed scenes there.

It's not the first time the series has used the jail. In 2003 Home and Away filmed at the old maximum security prison for a storyline involving Tammin Sursok's character, Dani Sutherland.

This time, however, they turned it into a male prison.

"We love the jail for filming, it's the real deal. Every corner tells a story, and pictorially there's so much variety," Home and Away location manager Paul Ewing said.

More than 43 local extras were used for the shoot and the episodes are expected to air in February next year. Cast and crew passed through the same gates as some of Australia's most infamous criminals.
